What is Diabetes? February 13, 2017

"There is a resurgence of hope in the treatment of diabetes today such as we experienced in 1880 when the cause of diabetes was located in the pancreas, in 1914 when the lives of diabetics were prolonged by the therapeutic utilization of undernutrition, and again most strikingly in 1921 with the discovery of insulin. Today assurance is added to hope , because we know control of diabetes is possible and worth while."
Elliott P. Joslin, M. D.
For me diabetes is not just test book or old history investigation. It is my life today and tomorrow, if I will be careful and alive. Today in 2016 Diabetes is number 7 cause of Death in America. It is number 4 in NYC, big city where I do live.
Table cause of death
 1949       1948       1940                                                1949        1948         1940
 1                 1             1                disease of heart         971.7       988.5       1076.4
  2                2              2               cancer                        349.1       322.7        292.5
 3                 3              3             vascular nerve system 138.9     134.9        120.3
4                 4               5           accidents                       60.6        67.1          73.6
 5               6                 8         early infancy                 43.2         42.1          39.2
6                 7              6           influenza & Pneumonia  30.0       38.7          70.3
7               10            10         atherosclerosis and BP        28.7       18.9        18.3
  8               8            7           TB                                      26.3          30.0       45.9
8                 5            4           nephritis                              19.9        53.0        81.5
10               9            8           diabetes mellitus                 16.9        26.4        26.6
I do understand, it is  complicated to compare and contrast  what was in 1940 and what is today. However most interesting point is, the rank of diabetes mortality did not go down as it happened with most other causes of death. The heart, cancer, stroke, kidneys, and diabetes still on the almost the same place as it was 60 years ago, why? TB which was Death Sentence once, right now is effectively treatable, and no longer is top ten leading cause of death. Flu is no longer the treat for humans. Children do not die in early infancy that they took high rank in 1940th. Diabetes still on the almost the same spot, but a little bit higher. So do heart, stroke, kidney, nerve system. Why? What if it is diabetes which leads to the mortality due to stroke, heart, kidney? Our blood is way too sweet. The sugar deposits on our inner tissue such as heart and lungs, and to get rid of sugar our body system tries to clean system with water, so kidneys work harder then anyone non diabetic body.  These cause of Death still on the same spot as it used to be back to 1940, Top Ten.
It is easy to see that Starvatiion was not cure for diabetics as today it is highly and aggressively popularized by ADA, WHO, and Medical Industry. It is prolonged life, but not for long, and it leads to longer way to Death End. Now every one wished to have this life in pain and misery.
In his books and articles Elliott P. Joslin, M. D. always published that early detection of diabetes is the clue to prevent complications. What do we have today? If one diagnosed with diabetes early stage, what is next? Treatment, life style modifications, diet, work out. This does not depend when diagnose of diabetic  was diagnosed with diabetes. Every time when diabetic in clinic or in doctor's office, diabetic pushed hard to modify its life. Its, not 'his' nether  "her", but "its" like we are sort of lab rats. It is all the time taken for granted, diabetes is resulted our body size and shape. Even I was in the same medical office almost ten years, nothing ever was changed in my diabetes treatment regime. I took Metformin, Glipizide (SU) and doctor insisted every month, I have to lose weight. Does not matter how my weight went up and down, I have to lose it regardless of the reality.
So, what is the reason to detect diabetes early? Really, what is the reason? SU will kill the healthy working beta cells. There is no one way to preserve poorly working pancreas with SU and severe work outs. This is why, diabetics type 2 who are not insulin dependent diabetics because of medical care deny us insulin therapy, die withing ten years after being diagnosed with diabetes. Regardless of the severity of medical condition, most of us die withing ten years after being diagnosed with diabetes type 2 if we do not switch to insulin.
If I have to take insulin later, why do not start to take it early, as soon as diabetes was detected, so treatment started early and diabetes would not bloom and lead to severe complications? Why it is not applicable? Why we all have to take Metformin and life style modifications, and every one do know very well, diabetes type 2 is progressive medical condition? We will go to our number 7 spot in line to grave. Why to speed this progress?
