Hungry for Health: Fasting's Medical Benefits. Which one? July 18, 2018

"In the early 1990s, my own science colleagues viewed fasting as irrelevant, and it was largely ignored by the medical community," explained Valter Longo, PhD, a forerunner of fasting research and director of the Longevity Institute at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. "Now things are changing very rapidly, and fasting is the most widely adopted diet in those under age 34 in the United States."

In 1970 my generation just finished high school, and all what we were doing, fasting and taking water pills to reduce weight in all attempt we could do.  We went to beach to play ball. We hiked. And we had all activities available for our age and time. No one of us was fatty. Still, we all try to lose weight as much as we could. Time passed. In 1990s our children took the same path. Friend's of mine daughter, skin-n-bone, turned her skinny jeans around her skinny west and cried, that she was fatty.
so, the first passage in the article is not true. So simple. Fasting is known for centuries, and it was used all the time in religion and in Noble society.
Another point is, Fasting is not only under age of 34, but we all do it. Go to many forums and see, every one talking how one lost ***** pounds, and get healthy. At the same time on our streets it is different fact. American population is obese and heavy. Why?
  •  The most popular fasting regimen is undoubtedly the 5:2 diet, in which participants restrict themselves to approximately 500-600 calories 2 days a week but eat as they normally would for the remaining 5 days.
  • Other common regimens include time-restricted feeding (eat a standard amount of calories, but only within a limited time frame),
  •  alternate-day fasting (eating nothing one day, then whatever you like the next),
  • and periodic fasting (abstaining from food and energy-containing beverages for continuous days, sometimes stretching out to 3 weeks).
  • In addition, researchers such as Longo are investigating the efficacy of fasting-mimicking diets for reducing markers of aging and risks for age-related diseases.
This is short list of popular diets. There are many others such as keto-diet, or Nutrisystem diet, and list going on and on. Why it is so many of them?  Because of no one of them work, so people try one after another in attempt to find right one. In mean time pounds collected around middle area, blood sugar rising, and blood started clotting. It is difficult to say how many lives lost in attempt to lose weight in one way or another, with diet, fasting, or weight loss surgeries. There are never studies, how diet effect people, or how fasting shorten lives. No one will get paid for this, so no one publish these articles or books.
When our bodies enter a fasting state, we deplete the stores of glucose in our livers and convert to fat-derived ketone bodies. Depending on your physical output during the fasting period, you can enter a ketogenic state within hours.
I would not say how effective this diet for weight lose. Is this ketogenic state healthy state? Not at all.  Diabetics type 2 when sugar getting too high get into this state. This is why we should not skip our meal, be hungry. Now, one of the most dangerous complications wrong treated diabetes type 2 presented as Medical Benefits. If it is for me, I will white till study confirm, it is safe and beneficial. So far, there are no studies done.
And also remember, in keto stage fat used as source of energy. Brain can use only glucose. This is why diabetics have coma.
"If you look back in the literature, the recommendation that we eat three meals a day with some snacking on top is mainly based on studies of diabetics, and the notion was that you don't want to have big spikes in glucose," said Mark P. Mattson, PhD, chief of the Laboratory of Neurosciences at the National Institute on Aging, and professor of neuroscience at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. "But it turns out that intermittent fasting actually improves glucose regulation in both animals and humans."
As it is well known diabetes type 2 is number 7 cause of death in America. Why? Because of treatment for diabetics type 2 starting with life style modifications, weight lost recommendations, and medicine which is cheap but does not add insulin in blood stream. Before diabetics type 2 die, they collect pounds in attempt to survive. But at last stage there is no longer hunger. Recommendations by med pro does not safe diabetics type 2 lives.
It is presented that big spike in glucose resulted by huge meal size. There are no studies, how glucose spike in diabetic's body. Th matter of fact, high level of glucose raised with time. Then longer duration of diabetes then higher level of sugar going.
High level of sugar in diabetic's body resulted not by big meal size but too little insulin secretion, or too small insulin storage capacity.
"The epidemic of obesity, including childhood obesity, occurred in the past 40 years with the eating pattern of three meals a day plus snacks," Mattson added. "So clearly, that is not necessarily a healthy eating pattern. If people can avoid overeating by skipping meals, once they adapt to that, it can only be a good thing."
Just very good advice for population where every one of 10 is diabetic type 2, and millions of non diagnosed diabetics. This is why I usually advice, use your own brain, what is good for you. And be very careful to trust in doctors. As it is clear from this point, today they said eat in this way, and then they will say, no it is wrong way to eat, do it as I said to you, and so so on, one year after another, full our lives. No thanks. About children obesity, remember, there are millions of not diagnosed diabetics. In past these children would be in hospital ward, in coma state. Today they are fatty, obese, but happy with mother and father. Tomorrow when they would be 40 and over they would not be obese and be healthy. Right opposite to our generation.
In a 2015 epidemiologic analysis of women participating in the 2009-2010 US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, researchers were able to show, for the first time, that longer nighttime fasting duration was significantly associated with improved glycemic regulation, and thereby reduced risk for breast cancer.
This statement is easy to test by own study. Try to do not eat after night as long as you can and see if your glucose level will be improved. Not one reading right before meal, of cause it would be lower. But during month or year.  This is what improved glucose regulation can be.
I never run these studies for myself. It is not important. I study, what dose of insulin I must inject every day, day after day, and how this dose effect my number on glucose meter. Then after three month doctor will run test and see if my A1c getting better or worse. From my experience I do know, then more smooth my life going, no infections, no stress, and regular never skipped insulin shots , then better blood sugar control.
