To dose of insulin is complicated and confusing. There are many different recommendations how to dose Insulin in every day life. Most important, they are all do not work. In some medical articles there are statement that best way to dose insulin is in hospital, because of there are all the time diabetic under closer attention. The reality is right opposite. It is in hospitals where diabetics die because of low blood sugar. It is very unusual that diabetic inject so high dose of insulin that it leads to fatal result at home. Personally I injected high dose when I missed long acting insulin which is high dose with short acting insulin which is usually low dose. I injected high dose of Novolog in stead of Lantus solo star. I survived. Just took additional portion of meal, chicken soup, and monitored my level of sugar more often. In hospital there is no chicken soup. In stead it is glucose and it leads to high level of sugar.
Regardless why sugar dropped low, after every episode of low blood sugar there is high blood sugar follow up. I cannot answer why this pattern, but it is simple fact: low blood sugar all the time followed by abnormally high blood sugar.
There are many different formulas how to count dose of insulin. Also there are many attempt to avoid low blood sugar with insulin use. It is suggested that insulin must be perfectly dosed. It is not possible. Usually what is the finish line in attempt to avoid low blood sugar is only one, reduce dose of insulin. The effect of this action is right opposite to desire result. Then higher high blood sugar then more difficult to avoid low blood sugar, and the drop in low blood sugar is lower with higher level of sugar. Then closer to the normal level then less low dropping in case of low blood sugar.
So, how to find the dose of insulin to inject and do not have low blood sugar wich can be very danger or to lead to ride up sugar?
I take one hour blood sugar reading sometimes. I need it to see how level of sugar spread during full day. Regarding that study I take dose of insulin to smooth heights and to elevate lows. Usually in all educations for diabetics it is diet we have to use to control blood sugar. Also it is diet how do I have to improve work of my kidneys and heart, and all other complications I do have. If it is one diet, which is "Healthy Life Style" then how one-size-fit-all can improve heart work and kidney stones? I do not see the way. Also I do not see how may I live "healthy' if I am very very ill person? So, I simple ignore it and try my best to live as well as I can and stay functional as long as I can.
I take long trip from A1c 9.4% down to A1c 5.6%. As long as it takes. I hoped that with my high dose of insulin my sugar is down to A1c 4.6%. It did not happen. Sugar still elevated even usual dose is over 500 units. What is interesting as I see it right now, with increased dose of insulin sugar dropping down. Probably I said it not really clear. We cannot just increase dose of insulin. Without connection with decreased level of sugar increased dose of insulin will lead to low blood sugar, fatally low blood sugar. This is the point. Diabetes treatment go very very slow. It is faster to decrease sugar from 9.4%, it took only one year. Then lower A1c dropping then more time it takes to drop to every 1%.
I have my time. I do not rush. Sugar never must be high, nether it must rise too high. Just right on the range. No one doctor in hospital can do it. It is time, and time is long in diabetes treatment, one year after another, long long way to back, to fix what is broken by many previous generations.
